For tagout use, OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(C)(2) requires a non-reusable, hand-attachable, self-locking and non-releasable attachment with a minimum unlocking strength of 50 pounds. This is an attachment requirement; a tag-body or grommet pull rating alone does not establish compliance.

OSHA 29 CFR 1910.147(c)(5)(ii)(D) requires employee identification on lockout/tagout devices. Section 1910.147(c)(5)(iii) requires tagout warning legends. Where used as accident-prevention tags, the applicable criteria are in 29 CFR 1910.145(f).

Choose the material for the actual workplace environment and expected time in service. Check that the warning and handwritten information remain legible. If you need documented thickness, temperature limits or chemical-resistance data for a specific option, request a bulk or custom quote before specifying it.

Use and ordering

Have an authorized employee complete and apply the tag under the employer's equipment-specific energy-control procedure. Identify the employee applying the device and keep the warning visible and legible. A tag does not provide the physical restraint of a lock. Follow the employer's controls for stored energy, verification, notification and device removal; see the Lockout/Tagout Tag Selection and Use Guide.

Compare nylon cable ties and padlocks for the application. The cable tie is a separate item for these individual tags; verify its documented attachment characteristics before tagout use. Tags are sold individually with a minimum order of 25. Select a material and quantity to view its current per-tag price and quantity discounts. For larger orders, custom sizes, wording or a company logo, request a bulk or custom quote and include the SKU, material and quantity required.

Lockout Safety Tag - Danger, Tagout! Do Not Operate This Switch Questions & Answers

Which material options can I select?

The available options are Classic Industrial, All Plastic and Sturdy Card Stock. Construction and suitability vary by material; use the selected option's information rather than applying Classic Industrial specifications to every option.

How do I write on the Classic Industrial tag?

The hard-matte Classic Industrial surface accepts pen, pencil and marker. Pencil notations may be erased for reuse. Reuse only when the tag and current information remain legible and its use is permitted by your workplace procedure.

Is a cable tie included with an individual tag?

These individual tags are sold separately from cable ties. See nylon cable ties and verify the selected tie's documented attachment characteristics for the application.

Can this tag replace a lockout device?

No. A tag communicates a warning and does not provide the physical restraint of a lock. Use it under the employer's energy-control program and the applicable conditions in 29 CFR 1910.147.

Who may remove a lockout/tagout device?

Normally the employee who applied it removes it. If that employee is unavailable, OSHA permits an employer-directed exception only with documented procedures, training, verification of absence, reasonable contact efforts, and notification before the employee resumes work. See the Lockout/Tagout Tag Selection and Use Guide and your employer's procedure.

Can I order custom wording or a larger quantity?

Yes. Custom sizes, wording and company-logo designs are offered. request a bulk or custom quote with the SKU, material, desired wording or artwork, and quantity. A quote request does not change the current listed prices.
