Blue Flag Railroad Safety Signs, Flags & Tags

Explore blue flag railroad signs, flags and tags for communicating work and equipment status. Select each item for the railroad's operating rules and the specific work location; a warning tag or sign is not automatically a substitute for a required blue signal.

49 CFR Part 218, Subpart B addresses blue signal protection for covered railroad workers inspecting, testing, repairing or servicing rolling equipment. A blue signal is a clearly distinguishable blue flag or blue light by day and a blue light at night, subject to the locomotive-cab exception in 49 CFR 218.5.

Under 49 CFR 218.23, displayed blue signals restrict coupling and movement, with specified exceptions, and may only be removed by the same craft or group that displayed them. Required placement and additional protection depend on the applicable main-track, other-track or servicing-area provisions. Follow the railroad's procedures and confirm suitability before selecting any product.
